Troy Rising
By John Ringo
A quick disclaimer, I don't know the author and I am in no way affiliated with the publishing house. I'm also not a professional reviewer or anything, I just read an interesting book and I thought that I would share it with you all.
The Troy Rising series by John Ringo currently consists of three books, Live Free or Die, Citadel, and The Hot Gate. When I first picked up Live Free or Die I didn't really know what to expect, for some reason the movie "Live Free or Die Hard" came to mind when I saw the book for the first time, and the similarities in there respective names caused me to pick up the book.
The basic plot line driving the series is a common one, which is that aliens invade, and humans fight them off. However, Live Free or Die, takes a different spin on a familiar setting. First contact is established in the form of a multidimensional travel ring being placed in the solar system by the Glatun, an advanced space faring race that built the gates, and are the most advanced in the area. The main issue is that the technology level of earth is too low to even reach the gate, so a few years pass with little events. Then the Horvath, another race, comes through the gate, drops rocks on the earth's cities, and then demands all the precious materials on the planet. The governments of earth beg the advanced Glatun to intervene, but the response is that Earth is too insignificant and isn't worth the time. The solution? Maple Syrup. That's right, Maple Syrup. They story then goes from Maple Syrup to building space battle stations, to a reconquest of Sol and beyond. Quite a turnaround.
The series though dense in information was a pleasant read and is unique, serious and humorous. Even if you don't normally read Sci-Fi, I would recommend this book to you.
